Why Music Copyright?

I have decided to focus my Copyright Blog on music materials in schools. This includes both print materials as well as recorded music materials. I have chosen music materials because music has been an intregal part of my life for as long as I can remember. My love and passion of music will make researching this topic an enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

I currently teach second grade and incorporate music into my classroom as much as possible. Daily singing can be heard coming from my classroom, and I also put on two productions with my class and another second grade class each year. The first production is a Christmas show on stage at my school. We teach the children Christmas songs and dances, and then perform them for each class in our school, as well as parents, family, and friends. I am interested to research music copyright so that I am sure we are following the rules and regulations set in place.

Many years ago when I taught at the primary level I really got into bringing music into the classroom. My best recollections as a child in school were when my teacher taught us wonderful songs. It's definitely what is missing in many classrooms. I am so happy to hear you are sharing your passion and building wonderful memories. Not only that...scientific based journals state how well music helps a child develop critical thinking and memorization skills. Bravo!

This is going to be really interesting! I know so many classroom teachers love to use music in their rooms and have no clue if there might be copyright issues with sharing recorded music, etc. I am looking forward to reading what you discover.

How do you go about getting permission to use music in the classroom that is copyrighted?
